When purchasing a puppy, a lot of folks ask us if there's a difference between buying a male or female. There is and, for the most part, it's the price. Females are more expensive because of the demand for them. What else? Well, if you plan on getting the puppy "fixed", it's cheaper to "fix" a male! The surgery for a female is more complicated and risky! How do the puppies compare after they are "fixed"? I believe in most cases you won't be able to tell any difference if you take care of this at a young age with a male. (before they develop any habits!) If you want to be further assured, consult your vet. Vets reccomend that you spade or neuter your pets.
Should I be careful where I take my puppy?
Yes, the safest thing to do is keep your new baby out of public places until it reaches 16 weeks of age or older. Especially stay away from the Park, Doggie Day-Cares and the Groomer...these are high traffic places where dogs/puppies go that may have viruses or diseases. Be sure to keep up on their vaccinations as well. Please be a responsible pet owner!
What kind of treats/toys should I buy my puppies?
Make sure you buy treats that are made in the U.S.A. We have been told that some treats made over seas use chemicals that could be bad for your puppy. Be careful that all treats and especially toys can't break into small dangerous pieces. There are many options. Some treats are especially good for your puppy's teeth. Ask your vet for help in choosing the right treat.
What do we need for when we bring our new baby home?
The puppy will be use to being warm. So, be sure to provide a safe and warm place. It's best to keep a little blanket and stuffed animal with the puppy, because it's also used to having company! When you move a puppy from one place to another, it stresses the puppy, and our goal is to make this adjustment as stress free as possible. You will receive a little baggie of puppy food that the pups are use to. We will educate you on things to watch for when you pick your puppy up. Something good to have on hand is honey...we suggest mixing a drop of this in their fresh water each day. This will help to combat hypoglycemia, something common to small breed puppies. Make sure your baby is eating, drinking, safe and given lots of love.
